Sara Angelucci’s Arboretum is on view at Stephen Bulger Gallery in Toronto from October 22 through November 19. With this series, Angelucci takes 19th-century portrait cabinet cards and turns them on their head. Instead of the trees being relegated to a mere painted backdrop, in her version, the trees are brought into the spotlight as the subject in the foreground. Using photographs the artist took of trees native to Ontario, the finished images examine the question of who the subject actually is and the tendency of humans to try to “tame” nature as something beneath us. There will be a reception for the artist on October 22 from 2 to 5 p.m.
