Through July 31, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto is presenting Thomas Ruff’s Object Relations. An examination of how photographs transform what we see, the prominent German artist created approximately 40 large-scale photomontages by combining mid-century found or collected photographs with the captions, marks and notes from the back of the source material. Ruff’s manipulation of the images (cropping, enlarging, retouching, etc.) brings the act of photography itself into the spotlight. This exhibition features woork from the series Phg, Negative, Sterne, Zeitungsfotos and Maschinen. This exhibition is a part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival.
