Through September 12, the Stephen Bulger Gallery in Toronto is presenting Canadian Modernism. This exhibition will feature vintage prints from the early- and mid-20th century by John Vanderpant, Harry Waddle, Rex Frost, Jessie Tarbox Beals, Jack Bunting, E. Haanel Cassidy, Otto Eaton, Johan Helders, E.J. Hessin, J.H. Mackay, Allan Sangster, William Gordon Shields and Charles Devenish Woodley. In the early era of photography, photographers made work that imitated paintings in order to establish photography’s legitimacy as an art form, but by the time of World War I, certain artists had begun to move towards “straight” photography.
