The CamRanger is one of the best wireless controllers available for Nikon or Canon DSLRs. In fact, just calling it a wireless controller is almost a disservice considering all that the CamRanger can do. This nifty wireless unit brings unprecedented control to any Canon or Nikon DSLR through the use of a smartphone or computer.

The CamRanger supports an impressive selection of operating systems including iOS 5, Android 3.2, or Mac OSX 10.7 or higher. There is also a beta version of the software available for Windows-based computers made available through the CamRanger website. Set-up of the CamRanger was very easy as it was connected through Wi-Fi on the device. The process took under five minutes including device registration and password set-up.

The real star of the CamRanger is the app control feature that offers an all-in-one solution for controlling the camera. The panel gives you total control, allowing you to adjust most camera settings—including focus—with a few simple clicks. The combination of the live-view and histogram features allows for a more accurate exposure setting compared to what is available on the back of the camera.

With a control distance of almost 150 feet, this is a perfect device for wildlife photographers looking to add separation between themselves and the subject while maintaining camera control. The auto-bracket and intervalometer features are helpful for a variety of subjects. It takes basic auto-bracketing features and puts them on steroids. For example, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i auto-bracketing mode only allows for 3 images to be taken. But, when it’s connected to the CamRanger using a bracket of 1.0 E/V, it was able to take over 20 bracketed photos. The intervalometer was also amazing and is a must-have for anyone doing time-lapse photography. Because the CamRanger unit itself uses its own memory to keep track of the setting, you can set it up and turn off whatever device you have attached to it in order to get over 11 hours of time-lapsed footage. This is a perfect “set it and forget it” feature.

The CamRanger is one of those great devices that should be on the top of any Canon or Nikon shooter’s wish list. It does not matter if you are in a studio or in the field, this handy device makes any shooting that requires external control a breeze. With the number of features and regular firmware updates, it shows signs of great things to come. The included pouch is also a fantastic touch that allows you to simply and easily clip it onto a tripod. For more information on the CamRanger visit thecamerastore.com or camranger.com.
