The Metabones Speed Booster is an amazing, practical gadget for both photographers and videographers. This unique adapter brings the full frame field of view to the Sony NEX and FS cameras, which normally have a 1.5X crop factor. The optics in the adapter also focus the light on the sensor very effectively, doubling the light your lens can gather. This means a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens can shoot at f/2. It almost sounds too good to be true.
When we first looked at the specs on the adapter we were a bit skeptical. However, when our TCSTV crew tested the Speed Booster on the NEX-7, it resolved the same amount of detail as the full frame Nikon D600. That’s pretty amazing considering the extra glass added to the lens.
There are a few other benefits that the Metabones Speed Booster offers that other electronic adapters do not. For instance, it has infinity focus tuning built into the adapter, which makes it very simple to use. It also has in-camera electronic aperture control for Canon lenses on Sony bodies. These features allow for more creative possibilities and can expand the usage of your existing Canon glass.
We had a difficult time finding any major flaws with the Speed Booster. The only feature needing improvement is the autofocus, as it is not supported on all cameras yet. And of course, it does not allow autofocus tracking on the cameras that are supported. That just means we will need to use our manual focusing skills or point-to-point autofocus—not such a huge deal, especially if you are using it for video.
Whether you’re a videographer or photographer, if you have an NEX camera and some Canon glass, you should try out the Speed Booster. If not, just know that this adapter is a sure sign of great things to come. For more information about the Metabones Speed Booster visit thecamerastore.com or metabones.com.
