The Leica Lens Coffee Mugs have finally arrived! The latest lens-themed coffee mugs are stylized to resemble either a Leica Noctilux-M 50-mm f/0.95 lens or a Leica Summarit-S 70-mm f/2.5 ASPH CS lens. I chose the Noctilux version because it looks like Leica’s highest-speed aspherical lens. The real deal has a five-figure price tag to accompany its world-class reputation, so the mug is likely the closest I will get to owning one.
The ceramic mug is packaged in an authentic shiny silver box, complete with Leica’s logo and font type. It would be easy to mistake this packaging for a real Leica lens, and I certainly have no problem with that. The mug itself has a nice weight to it and a sleek lens-like finish.
My only disappointment with the Leica Lens Coffee Mug is the lid. I wish it looked more like a lens cap and less like a coffee lid. That being said, it does serve its purpose quite well. After a couple of days of the box simply gleaming on my desk, I had to take it out to fulfill it’s true intentional use: coffee.
I brought my Leica Noctilux-M 50-mm f/0.95 lens mug to Bumpy’s Cafe, which is one of the best coffee shops in Calgary and is always packed. Normally everyone stands like sardines in silence waiting for their caffeine injections and delicious fresh baked muffins. I have to say, the lens mug received plenty of attention and sparked a conversation in the line. When my drink was ready, the barista even announced, “One Leica latte.” Honestly, what could be better than the best espresso in town served in a f/0.95 Leica lens?
