Nivelo 204 a Tidy Tripod

If you have a small camera, you don’t need a gigantic tripod. Something small, like Vanguard’s latest Nivelo 204 might do the trick. This unit is designed with Micro Four Thirds or compact cameras in mind.

The Nivelo is made of aluminium but weighs just 630 g (22 oz) and folds down to 30 cm (11.75 inches). It has a load rating of 2 kg (4.4 lb).

The four-section tripod is very quick to set up because each section needs only about a quarter turn to lock or unlock. When setting up, you grab the rubber foot at the tip of each leg, pull out to extend all the sections and then spin it through three-quarters of a turn to tighten them all. It takes just a few seconds to extend and tighten all three legs.

The centre column attaches to the tripod via a pivoting joint. This allows the head to tucked between the legs for storage, which accounts for the tidy folded length of just 30 cm (11.75 in.). With all the leg sections and the centre column fully extended, the tripod is one metre (39 inches); with the column down it is 83 cm (32.5 inches). The head, which is included, is the weak link of the tripod. It’s made of plastic and it flexes a bit as you handle the camera, so you’d be advised to use a remote shutter release or use the timer, ditto if you have the centre column fully extended.
