Until September 19, 2010, the Sidney R. Yates Gallery, Chicago Cultural Center presents The Jazz Loft Project, Chicago, IL. The exhibition features vintage black-and-white prints and rarely heard audio recordings by photographer W. Eugene Smith, who spent eight years documenting the jazz musicians, artists, and underground characters who inhabited the scene at 821 Sixth Avenue.
Curated by Sam Stephenson, the Jazz Loft Project director and Courtney Reid-Eaton of the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, the exhibition features more than 200 images, several hours of audio, and 16 mm film footage of Eugene Smith working in the loft. A gallery talk with Sam Stephenson is being held on Thursday, August 26, 12 p.m. The exhibition was organized by the Center for Documentary Studies, in association with the Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University.
